Ken Robinson on Finding Your Element

Dashielle Vawter

This is a great video about overcoming the blocks and finding your talents and passions. The main point is that often our talents aren’t on the surface, we have to go looking for them, searching for them. I know this has been true for me.

When I first broke away from what I thought I should be doing I went through a series of different jobs while searching for what would make me happy. I was an art teacher, worked on a political campaign, helped produce a documentary on the Bay Area local food movement, went to grad school for organizational systems and dropped out. Then I started running backpacking trips and trained to be a vision quest guide. A couple years later I realized that I didn’t want to do that for the rest of my life either.

Then, almost out of desperation I decided to go to a singing class—not as something I thought would be more than a hobby. But I discovered that music, singing specifically, was actually my deepest passion and joy. Soon thereafter I was asked to start coaching by a couple potential clients, which I also love to do. That whole process took 8 years, and in a way I’m still in it. I never would have guessed that music and coaching is where I’d end up. But I am so grateful to those younger courageous versions of myself that stuck with that process, and all the unknown territory it took me through.

This is what I want for everybody, or at least for everyone who s courageous enough to want it for themselves. If you are asking some of these questions and looking for support, whether you want coaching or not, I have some tools I can send you for free to get you started looking for your passions.
